“SMURBS has managed to set itself as an authoritative EO ambassador within the smart city landscape and to serve as a reference point for urban resilience in GEO. The use of EO is a necessary but not sufficient condition, it needs to be expanded in the consciousness of policy makers and stakeholders, beyond monitoring into holistic planning for the sustainable future of cities. However, there still lacks a consolidated framework for tapping the full potential of EO and integrating it in the operational modus operandi of cities, which necessitates frame programmes like ERA-PLANET, to lay the foundations and provide the authoritativeness and impetus for the desired convergence.”

ERA-PLANET has strengthened the domain of Earth Observation and contributed significantly to European leadership within the GEO Work Plan 2022-25. ERA-PLANET has provided advanced tools to support decision making and is an essential part of global environmental monitoring networks. It has systematically built bridges and provided comprehensive and accurate information to policy makers in areas of sustainable and smart cities (SMURBS), monitoring of persistent pollutants (iGOSP, iCUPE) and environmental change, atmospheric pollution, persistent pollutants (included heavy metals) and influence of anthropogenic activities in the Arctic region (iCUPE) as well as a better understanding of Essential Variables (EVs) for environmental monitoring and policy framework such as SDGs (GEOEssential). The capability of ERA-PLANET to bring to the same table a wide scientific and policy experience (multidisciplinary, multiplatform, multitool) was a major point of strength for achieving the Project’s objectives.

"ERA-PLANET gave a great opportunity to European Earth Observation specialists to collaborate in developing solutions to address environmental policy needs at various scales in relationships with the activities of the Group on Earth Observation (GEO) and the European Copernicus programme. With the GEOEssential project we could further explore and deploy the concept of Essential Variables (EVs) across sectorial domains (Climate, Biodiversity, Water, Energy, …). We are even more persuaded now that this is an essential step in order to deliver quick and efficient spatially explicit indicators that can also take into account synergies and tradeoffs between them. With the VLab and its Knowledge-Based platform, ERA-PLANET brings a technical solution to close the gap between raw data and knowledge in the race to better inform policy makers, industries and the general public about the crucial environmental issues at stake."

ERA-PLANET works to simplify access to information required by decision makers and to bring together and strengthen the European national and regional research and innovation programs in the EO domain. It allowed iCUPE to connect to the thematic strand 4 on polar areas and natural resources by integrating national and international monitoring and assessment activities in relation to ecosystem and environment quality in Arctic and Antarctic regions. It is the multidisciplinarity character of the ERA-PLANET project which is the strength of climate and air pollution research, that needs strong support in future funding considerations. The ERA-PLANET programme allowed iCUPE to produce and/or develop (i) improved climate variables using novel, robust satellite validation methods, (ii) quality-controlled observational datasets and proxies for environmental monitoring and assessment of impacts on climate, environment iand health in polar regions, (iii) improved estimates of Arctic contaminant health risks using new updated models evaluated against observations, (iv) integrated approches combining analysis of in-situ, aircraft and satellite data together with modelling to evaluate, refine and improve emission estimates of short-lived climate forcers (black carbon, methane), heavy metals and emerging POPs in Arctic.
